AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Rwanda's national team secured a vital 2-1 win against Benin at home

Tonight, at Kigali's iconic Amahoro Stadium, the Amavubi delivered a performance that will be etched in Rwandan football lore. With a surprisingly 2-1 comeback victory over Benin, Rwanda not only secured three crucial points but also significantly boosted their chances of qualifying for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The match began on a tense note as Benin took an early lead on 43th minutes, capitalizing on a defensive lapse after fitina omborenga's mistakes led to Andreas Hountondji goal against Amavubi. The Rwandan fans, though momentarily silent, never lost faith in their team. As the first half drew to a close, the Amavubi regrouped, displaying a tenacity that would define the rest of the game.
The equalizer came in the 70th minute after a period of sustained pressure from Rwanda. Nshuti Innocent, who had been a constant threat on the Benin defense, found himself in the right place at the right time. After a well-worked move down the right wing, the ball was crossed into the box by team captain Djihad Bizimana, and it fell to Imanishimwe Emmanuel's head who assisted to Nshuti and scored it. Without hesitation, he rifled the ball into the net, sending the home crowd into a excitement. The roar from Amahoro Stadium echoed as Rwanda celebrated their much-needed equalizer. With the game now tied 1-1, Rwanda grew in confidence and after one minute. They pressed Benin high up the pitch, forcing mistakes and creating more chances. Benin, visibly rattled, struggled to regain their composure. The turning point came in the 72th minute when Rwanda was awarded a penalty after a clumsy challenge by a Benin defender on team captain Djihad Bizimana inside the box. The referee didn’t hesitate to point to the spot, and up stepped Rwanda’s captain, Djihad Bizimana, to take the decisive penalty.
Bizimana, calm and composed, slotted the ball into the bottom left corner, sending the Benin goalkeeper the wrong way. The stadium erupted as Rwanda took the lead, 2-1, with just over 17 minutes left to play. Benin threw everything forward in the closing stages, but Rwanda’s defense, led by Abdul Rwatubyaye, held firm, blocking shots and making crucial tackles to protect their lead. The Rwandan fans, sensing victory, cheered loudly with every clearance and every save. When the final whistle blew, the stadium erupted into scenes of joy and celebration. Rwanda’s 2-1 victory over Benin was not only a crucial win in their AFCON qualifying campaign, but helped Amavubi remained chances for AFCON 2025 Qualifiers with two games in hand left to play like away against Nigeria and at home against Libya.
